Work Experience

  • Plans Examiner - Mecklenburg County, NC (1990 - 2001). Reviewed construction drawings and specifications for conformance with building codes and standards. Advised permit applicants of minimum code requirements and served as technical resource in areas of expertise: structural engineering, wood-frame construction, seismic design, wind loads, life safety, and Americans with Disabilities Act. Actively participated in the code development process at state and national levels that resulted in improved building practices, construction cost savings, and reduced inconsistencies in code interpretations.
  • Structural Engineer - Hines Engineering, Charlotte, NC. June 1989 to April 1990.
    Performed design of commercial and industrial facilities. Prepared engineering calculations and drawings.
  • Structural Engineer - Duke Power Company (1980 - 1987). Provided engineering design for electric power facilities. Extensive finite-element computer analysis of structural models. Reworked reactor coolant pump supports at Oconee Nuclear Station to improve response to seismic events.
  • Carpenter / Laborer (1970 - 1980). Worked several jobs building houses in Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, and Union Counties. Worked on commercial construction jobs in Richmond, VA, including apartments, condominiums, hotels, and highway bridge across the James River.

  • Served as Chairman of the Mecklenburg County Americans with Disabilities Act Code Committee (1998)

Military Experience

  • US Army (1974 - 1976). Graduated from Corps of Engineers Power Generator School, Ft. Belvoir, VA. Repaired diesel and gas turbine generators for Pershing missile field artillery, Neu Ulm, Federal Republic of Germany.
