EThe rating of the elasticity or stiffness of a material.
eavesThose portions of a roof that project beyond the outside walls of a building.
eaves fascia (fascia board)A board secured horizontally to, and covering the vertical ends of, roof rafters. The board may support a gutter.
eccentric loadA load or force upon a portion of a column or pile not symmetric with its central axis, thus producing bending.
edge beamA stiffening beam at the edge of a slab.
effective depthThe depth of a beam or slab section as measured from the top of the member to the centroid of the tensile reinforcement.
efflorescenceA whitish, powdery deposit of soluble salts carried to the surface of stone, brick, plaster, concrete, or mortar by moisture. The moisture evaporates, leaving the residue.
elastic limitThe maximum amount of deforming stress a material can sustain and still return to its initial shape without having incurred any permanent deformation.
electric baseboard heaterA heating system with electric heating elements installed in longitudinal panels, usually along the baseboards of exterior walls.
electric fixtureAn electrical device that is fastened to a ceiling or wall and used to hold lamps.
elevated slabA floor or roof slab supported by structural floor members.
ellAn extension, addition, or secondary wing that joins the principal dimension of a building at a right angle.
embedded reinforcementIn reinforced concrete, any slender steel members, such as rods, bars, or wires, that are embedded in concrete in such a way as to function together with the concrete in resisting forces.
epoxyAny of several synthetic, usually thermosetting, resins that provide superior adhesive power and hard, tough, chemical-and corrosion-resistant coatings.
errors and omissions insuranceProfessional liability insurance protecting architects or engineers from claims for damages that may result from alleged professional negligence.
evaporatorThe part of a refrigeration system in which vaporization of the refrigerant occurs, absorbing heat from the surrounding fluid and producing cooling.
expansion bolt (expansion anchor, expansion fastener, expansion shield)An anchoring or fastening device used in masonry, which expands within a predrilled hole as a bolt is tightened.
expansion jointIn a building structure or concrete work, a joint or gap between adjacent parts which allows for safe and inconsequential relative movement of the parts, caused by thermal variations or other conditions.
expansion joint fillerMaterial used to fill an expansion joint to keep it clean and dry. Materials commonly used are felt, rubber, and neoprene.
exterior plywoodPlywood whose layers of veneer are bonded with a waterproof glue.
extruded sectionStructural sections formed by extrusion and used in light construction.
